When I told my twenty-something son that his female parent and I would be moving to Southern California to investigating a saga on mid-century current architecture, he snickered, "How can they beckon that modern? It's so passee."

"How else would you describe bilinear homes of glass, stone and steel?" I asked. "Whatever," he replied, dismissing the theme. And so, I drove southbound cross-examination whether the reverie homes of my youth, promoted next as the houses of tomorrow, were yesterday's subject matter.

On start in Palm Springs, we curbed into the Movie Colony Hotel, formed by field of study mastermind Albert Frey in 1935. We, in our 50s, were the first guests near. Sweet revenge! Our son's generation had unconcealed what he hadn't and we in a bit would, that mid-century fashionable building is as hot nowadays as when it was introduced, next to a new social group of retro-focused X-gens clasp its plain attractiveness. Modern? You bet it is, and Palm Springs and Los Angeles are wherever the uncomparable examples can be saved.

To the uninitiated, modern architecture seems to be one concept, but in information it is layered next to opposite styles: prairie, art deco, international, art moderne, wayside vernacular, mid-century, googie, recent builder, simultaneous builder, shed, and period folk. All of these styles can be seen in California.

In any otherwise part of the pack of the world, genre edifice is the odd exclusion or is fired as man artlessly anachronistic, but in Southern California - principally in Palm Springs and Los Angeles - its examples are maintained, restored, preserved and their hurry overhead to appreciation high point snob value. Support for modernism, there, is evidenced in unnumerable ways.
